Anticipation mixed with a bit of edginess filled the indoor range of Georgia Southern Shooting Sports Education Center as the Boys and Girls Club Archers took their places on the shooting line. A numbing silence fell over the onlookers as the young archers nocked their first arrow and drew back to shoot at their designated target. Although the participants were engaged in a friendly competition, the victor had already been decided. The conclusion of a successful launch of the pilot archery program was hailed the champion.
During the summer of 2016, the Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County partnered with the Georgia Southern Shooting Sports Education Center (SSEC) to start an archery program for the kids. This program would allow members (3rd grade to teens) to receive archery instruction at the SSEC. The program teaches kids discipline, persistence, focus, self-control, and confidence among an array of other life skills. The pilot program was a huge success as members flocked to enroll during the fall semester. The archery program continued throughout the spring semester and concluded near the end of the school year with the Georgia Southern Shooting Sports Education Center hosting a tournament. The participants were all members of the Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County.
The young archers will not be resting up during the summer months. They will be gainfully engaged and still honing their new skills. The Boys and Girls Club Staff will continue to provide basic level archery instruction and safety at the Boys and Girls Club. The partnership with GSU SSEC will start back up fall semester of 2017. The future of the program is optimistic and the opportunities are limitless with hopes of the Boys and Girls Club competing against other school programs and teams.
